What EXACTLY is microblading?

There are countless brow products and services out there these days. The truth is, all of them are geared towards giving you the brows you want and deserve.

Unfortunately, most of these options are temporary and require a lot of your precious time, only to wash off at night. That is why one service, in particular, stands out among the rest- microblading.

But, what exactly is microblading?

Microblading Treatment

You can achieve the look of fuller brows through microblading, which is a semi-permanent tattoo technique. A hair-toned pigment is added to your skin with hair-like strokes, adding both natural definition and symmetry to your brows, or lack thereof.

Your brow artist should work closely with you so that the two of you can match expectations and results throughout the entire process. To achieve the look you are hoping for, the microblading treatment process should follow a timeline that looks like this:

1. Consultation

At each initial appointment, a consultation is held to discuss which brow method might be best for your skin type and desired outcome. During your consultation, you’ll be able to discuss specific details about the process, including pigments, pre-care, post-care, etc.

It is best to come wearing your daily makeup so that your artist can see how you are used to filling in your brows every day. It is also helpful to bring in some screenshots of their previous work that you like!

2. Brow Mapping

You can get a better idea of your microblading results through brow mapping. This technique is used to help determine the ideal brow shape for your face based on your unique features. Measurements are taken, and your brow specialist will outline what your brows should look like.

You will have final approval on the shape of your brows before getting started on the microblading process. It is always ideal to start conservative on your first appointment. At your 6-8 week touch-up, brows can always be made thicker or darker.

3. Choosing a Pigment Color

Your brow artist will walk you through this step with options of pigment colors that match your skin tone and the color of your brow hairs. The pigment chosen should match closely with the color of your brow hairs to give the most natural appearance to blend in with what brow hair you currently have.

Another case where you can be more conservative at the first appointment is with your pigment. Start with a lighter pigment and remember that you can always go darker at your touch-up session.

4. Microblading Treatment

Next up is the actual microblading treatment. Your brows will be cleaned and numbed, and your brow specialist will use sterilized tools to begin manually drawing the hair-like strokes into your brows.

5. Healing Process

Your brow artist should prepare you for your healing process. After your service, you will be provided with the necessary tools to ensure that your brows heal properly. Your aftercare is such a vital part of the process and can determine the ultimate outcome of your brows.

Expect about 10 days of healing where you will:

  • Wash your brows daily with a special soap

  • Apply ointment

  • Avoid swimming, sunlight, and getting your brows wet in the shower

6. Touch-Up

A touch-up appointment is required 6-8 weeks after your initial treatment to ensure the skin is healing properly with the perfect shape and color. The touch-up appointment will also help lock in the pigment so that your new brows will last.

7. Annual Touch-Ups

The best part about microblading is that most clients can go at least one year or longer after their first two sessions before their next touch-up. Microblading can last for years, depending on your skin type and lifestyle, which is why it is important to invest in a microblading artist that you trust.
